Tom Brady Offers Guidance to Shedeur Sanders After Draft Slide

In the wake of the 2025 NFL Draft, where quarterback Shedeur Sanders experienced an unexpected fall to the fifth round, NFL legend Tom Brady reached out to offer words of encouragement and perspective.

A Surprising Draft Outcome

Shedeur Sanders, son of Hall of Famer Deion Sanders, entered the draft with high expectations. Many analysts projected him as a potential early-round pick, citing his impressive college career at Jackson State and the University of Colorado. However, as the draft unfolded, Sanders remained unselected until the Cleveland Browns picked him at No. 144 overall in the fifth round.

Brady's Message of Motivation

Tom Brady, who famously was drafted 199th overall in the sixth round of the 2000 NFL Draft, empathized with Sanders' situation. During an appearance on the "Impaulsive" podcast, Brady revealed that he had texted Sanders after the draft, saying:

"I actually texted Shedeur because I know him very well, and I said, 'Dude, like, whatever happens, wherever you go, like, that's your first day. Day 2 matters more than the draft. I was [pick] 199. So, who could speak on it better than me, like, what that really means? Use it as motivation. You're gonna get your chances. Go take advantage of it.'"

Brady's message emphasized that draft position does not determine a player's success in the NFL. He encouraged Sanders to focus on his performance and seize the opportunities that come his way.

Sanders' Response and Tribute

In a nod to Brady's influence, Sanders chose to wear the No. 12 jersey with the Browns—the same number Brady wore throughout his illustrious career. This decision reflects the respect and admiration Sanders holds for the seven-time Super Bowl champion.

Looking Ahead

Sanders joins a Browns quarterback room that includes veterans Deshaun Watson, Joe Flacco, and Kenny Pickett, as well as fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel. With Watson expected to miss most of the season due to injury, the competition for the starting role is open. Sanders' performance during training camp and preseason will be crucial in determining his position on the depth chart.

Brady's mentorship and advice could serve as a guiding light for Sanders as he embarks on his professional career. The young quarterback has the opportunity to prove his doubters wrong and carve out his own legacy in the NFL.
